Pedagogy

Changing Education Paradigms

“The term pedagogy is commonly used in one of two ways. in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, pedagogy is often used as a synonym for teaching. However, as has been noted a number of times in literature, when described in terms of its European traditions pedagogy entails more than just teaching. Van Manen (1999) described pedagogy as the art and science of educating teaching – based on its Greek roots (to lead a child). When viewed from this perspective, pedagogy is concerned with the relationship between learning and teaching. Understanding this interplay between teaching and learning and learning and teaching is an important shift in focus from teaching alone because it really means that the two exist together. The fact that teaching influences learning and learning influences teaching, and the way that is done, offers insights into the science of educating.”  – John Loughran (2010)

There has been significant research and discussion around education reform and preparing students for 21st Century careers and citizenship. Below are some of the world’s leading educational experts in this area with links to their websites, talks and documentaion.

2: Changes to how we learn, and how do we know we learn best?

MARTIN SELIGMAN

Martin Seligman is a pioneer of “happiology,” not simply because he has a systematic theory about why happy people are happy, but because he uses the scientific method to explore it. Through the use of exhaustive questionnaires, Seligman found that the most satisfied, upbeat people were those who had discovered and exploited their unique combination of “signature strengths,” such as humanity, temperance and persistence. This vision of happiness combines the virtue ethics of Confucius, Mencius and Aristotle with modern psychological theories of motivation. Seligman’s conclusion is that happiness has three dimensions that can be cultivated: the Pleasant Life, the Good Life, and the Meaningful Life.

BARRY SCHWARTZ

Barry Schwartz studies the link between economics and psychology, offering startling insights into modern life. Lately, working with Ken Sharpe, he’s studying wisdom. In his 2004 book The Paradox of Choice , Barry Schwartz tackles one of the great mysteries of modern life: Why is it that societies of great abundance — where individuals are offered more freedom and choice (personal, professional, material) than ever before — are now witnessing a near-epidemic of depression?Conventional wisdom tells us that greater choice is for the greater good, but Schwartz argues the opposite: He makes a compelling case that the abundance of choice in today’s western world is actually making us miserable.
